Idaho Continues to Gain Residents From Other States

Idaho is still attracting new residents from across the United States.

New data from the U.S. Census Bureau shows that more people moved to Idaho from other states than moved away during 2024.

Nearly 73,000 people moved to Idaho last year. During the same time, about 60,000 Idaho residents moved to other states.

That means Idaho gained about 13,000 residents through domestic migration.

While that is still strong growth, it is slightly slower than the year before. In 2023, Idaho gained more than 16,000 residents from moves between states.

Washington and California Lead Migration to Idaho

For years, California and Washington have been the biggest sources of new Idaho residents. That trend continued in 2024, but the two states switched positions.

Washington became the largest source of new residents.

About 18,000 people moved from Washington to Idaho in 2024. At the same time, about 8,000 Idaho residents moved to Washington. This created a net gain of nearly 10,000 residents from Washington.

California was close behind.

More than 15,000 people moved from California to Idaho last year. Around 6,500 Idaho residents moved to California, leading to a net gain of nearly 9,000 residents.

Even though California remains a major driver of growth, the number of people moving from California to Idaho has slowed compared to previous years.

Other States Sending Residents to Idaho

Several other western states also sent more residents to Idaho in 2024.

The next largest sources of net domestic migration were:

  • Nevada: about 1,100 net new residents
  • Montana: about 900 net new residents
  • Alaska: about 600 net new residents

At the same time, some states saw more Idaho residents move there.

The biggest destination for people leaving Idaho was Utah, which gained about 3,000 residents from Idaho.

Other states attracting Idaho residents included:

  • Tennessee: about 1,300 movers
  • Texas: about 1,200 movers

Migration Is Driving Housing Demand in Idaho

Population growth is one reason Idaho’s housing and apartment demand remains strong.

During 2024, the state saw demand for nearly 5,000 apartment units, partly driven by new residents moving into Idaho.

Migration trends like this can play a big role in the Idaho housing market and Boise real estate market, especially as companies continue relocating employees and families move to the region.

If Idaho keeps attracting residents from other states, this steady flow of people could help balance any future slowdown in international immigration.

For commercial real estate investors, developers, and businesses looking to expand, this continued population growth is an important signal for the long-term strength of Idaho’s economy and real estate market.
